The Spanish Official Gazette (BOE) published Organic Law 1/2025 in early January, which seals the end of the “Golden Visa” in Spain.

The law, according to its own provisions, will come into force “three months after its publication in the Official State Gazette”, so April 3, 2025 has been set as the final date for new applications.

King Felipe VI signed the law, which repeals Articles 63 to 67 of Law 14/2013 – the legal framework that created the Spanish “Golden Visa” in 2013.

The BOE text guarantees protection for existing applicants. Investors or family members of investors who submit their complete application before the April deadline “may obtain the visa or authorization in accordance with the regulations in force at the time of application”.

“Golden Visa” holders also retain their rights. The BOE confirms that “visas and permits for investors through real estate acquisition valid on the day this transitional provision comes into force” will remain valid for the “period for which they were issued.”

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez already pushed for the closure of the program in April 2024, citing inflation in the real estate market and possible security risks.

The Popular Party (PP) majority in the Senate had temporarily halted progress with a veto on December 2, but Parliament overrode opposition, with 177 MPs voting for closure and 170 against.
