Visa and residence permit for Serbia

German citizens can enter Serbia without a visa for up to 90 days with a valid passport. A visa is required for a longer stay or to work.

Different visa options:
D visa: Long-term visa for stays of more than 90 days, e.g. for working, studying or family reunification.

C visa: Short-term visa for stays of up to 90 days, e.g. for tourist purposes.

Residency permit:

To obtain a residence permit in Serbia, you must meet certain requirements:

• Proof of a secure livelihood
• Health insurance
• Presentation of a valid passport
• Registration address in Serbia

You can apply for a residence permit at the relevant Serbian immigration authority.

Residence permit in Serbia by setting up a company:

Starting a business is an excellent way to obtain a Serbian residence permit as a foreign citizen. There is no minimum investment required for this route. You can create a Ltd. with a minimum share capital of 1 euro.

No physical presence is required to set up and run the company. However, you must visit the immigration office to sign and receive the residence documents.

Serbia has a streamlined company formation process, so you can expect your Serbian company to be registered in 5-7 days.
The immigration authorities would only grant you a temporary residence permit if your business is found to be genuine and operational.

You also don’t need to worry about opening a bank account in Serbia, as opening a bank account in Serbia, just like setting up a company, is pretty easy and quick.

You can apply for an extension six months after receiving your temporary residence permit. The temporary residence permit can be extended for 1-3 years.

After five years, you can apply for a permanent residence permit if you live in Serbia continuously for at least two and a half years.

Stay through real estate investments
Similar to starting a business, there is no minimum amount to invest in real estate when purchasing a temporary residence.

Residence applications based on real estate are handled on a case-by-case basis and the government has discretion to accept or reject your application.

You can only purchase Serbian real estate if your home country has a reciprocal real estate agreement with Serbia.

Most Western countries such as the USA, Australia, Canada, etc. have such agreements with Serbia, although it should be noted that foreign nationals are generally not allowed to own land in Serbia. The only exception is for EU citizens, but even then the purchase of land is subject to conditions.

However, if a registered company in Serbia wants to buy land with a native Serbian citizen as director, there is nothing to prevent this.

Citizenship of Serbia

There are several ways to obtain citizenship of Serbia. One is, for example, after you have lived there for 5 years after receiving your permanent residence permit, you can then apply for citizenship.
Another special variant is that, according to Section 19 of the Serbian Citizenship Law, it is possible for people who significantly support the country of Serbia and thus represent a certain importance for the country to obtain Serbian citizenship in this way.
